Nike - Los Fearless Free Throw Experience

Nike and IPG Media Lab challenged YDreams to create an immersive experience to feature at the Nike Store at the Staples Center in Los Angeles for the NBA All-Star game. We (as usual) went all out and suggested to build a game using the recently launched XBox Kinect where the user would be in Kobe Bryant's shoes shooting the winning free-throws of the game. Little did we know when we came up with that (later proven to be crazy) idea that there was no SDK to support our craziness. But we made it! It was successfully installed a couple of days before the event and feedback couldn't have been better.

Ideation and feasibility check
First things first and we started by evaluating the technology to fulfill our idea. What types of displays, where to place the cameras, optimal distances for the users, etc.. So we decided to use 3 big panels with a retroillumination projection for the Game and an all-in-one computer and touchscreen for the Kiosk. At the top of the middle screen was the Kinect camera (not easy to tame as it was very picky about the overall space lighting).

3D modeling
Although we had the sponsoring of NBA2K game, all 3D modeling was done by us to better control and support the overall experience.
